My Racquet Ratings

My name is Bruce , and I'm a racquetaholic

I can't even remember how I got this habit of accumulating racquets, but I have 20+ now, and it's getting out of control. I know some people have hundreds, so it's nice to know I'm not alone.

I thought I might as well start a blog about them, because I myself am always pleased to read other's opinions about a racquet's characteristics.

Wilson Ultra (Tapered Beam) Firebird

Wilson Ultra Firebird
Yet another Wilson racquet with the signature PWS bumps at 3 and 9 oclock - This is the first I've owned with the tapered beam, and although the strings are saggy and need replacing, its looking good - plenty of feel and enough power not to be hard work like I feel the PSC 6.1 is. I believe it is the same mould as the Wilson Ultra FPK 95, and is a European-only release.

As an aside, I have a Staff from the High Beam series, and it is a bit too powerful to be reliable, like the Graphite Aggressor I had from the same mould.

The tapered beam feels quite different, not too stiff - I'll put some new strings in it, and if I gain a bit more control without losing too much power, this might be a keeper

<edit>   Ok, well putting some RPM Blast poly in this did it no favours;  it's now a rather sullen underpowered beast, and maybe playing with more flexy-throated racquets like the PK Destiny recently has coloured my impressions.  In the meantime it goes back to the cupboard until I can spare it some livelier nylon.

  1. Hello. Great pic of the racket. I used to use this as a junior and have never been able to find a replacement. Is there any chance you have (or could take) the specs of this racket, weight, balance, beam width? May help me in my never ending quest!

    1. Happy to, Phillip, as I should have done that anyway!

I actually have the manufacturers tag from this one, and it says:
weight: 320-335g; balance: 290-310mm; stiffness slightly on the stiff side of medium.

My own measurements show it as 12.7 oz strung, head-light (which the above implies) not so much so as my PS 5.0 but about the same as my Blade, so about 3 points hl.

Beam is 25mm at the handle tapering to 22mm for the head.

Oh, and its GPK (Graphite Kevlar Fibreglass) construction though what the mix is they don't say.

      Hope that helps!

    2. Thank you Bruce! That is brilliant, hopefully I can now match it up to something in the wilson range!

  2. Recently found the obscure, rare Wilson Ultra Classic 6.2 ... it was created before the PSC 6.1 'Classic' was released, and followed on from the Ultra FPK.

The Ultra 6.2 (not the Hyper Hammer BTW) has a swing index of 6.2 and the same 'Tapered Beam' as the FPK, but the same 'feel' as the PSC 6.1

It also has incredible black and red striped graphics like the old Ultra line of Wilson sticks from the 80s. I don't believe this stick was ever released (?)

The racquet has hybrid strings in it right now, and I don't like the feel of them, nor do I like the tension, so I need to restring before I can say how it really hits.

It's heavy at 12.5oz or so, and 18x20 pattern (not my favorite, the PSC 6.1 stretch has same pattern and I dislike it - I prefer more open stringbed of PSC 16x18)

You can see pics of stick at Tennis Talk !!!

  3. Heya, What modern stick would you compare this to? I am seeking a players stick like the Nblade 98 (I see you have the BLX Blade). I loved the B and K blades and cannot find anything similar on the market.

    1. You have me at a loss for a decent reply there; I'd say it feels more like one of the Prince line than the latest Wilsons, whatever the latest incarnation of the EXO3 is, perhaps?

  4. oops my apologies I somehow missed your post;

You have me intrigued, I'll have to look out for that one.

I know what you mean about the 18x20 pattern, it is great for control from the point of view of consistently hitting a good length, but the balls do slide off the tighter mesh a lot easier, too, so it's a compromise everyone has different takes on.

  5. I am still using the Ultra Firebird. Its is flexible, arm-friendly,
and generates lots of power so I can concentrate on my swing and follow-through. I like to start with Ultra Firebird for 30mins and switch to PSC 6.1 later. PSC 6.1 then, feels like an extended arm and the timing will be perfect. Even if I don't win points, it feels sublime to hit with such accuracy. Ed, Singapore

  6. I stopped in Dechatlon with three legendary rackets: Jokovic's Head, Federer's Pro-Staff, and Nadal's Aero and I told myself I will bet everyone of these champions with his own raket but a question still persist:
Q: -,,What's my raket, the bear one?!"
R: - Surely Polar Bear one's it's one who those champions with weack hands can't play because she's rigid like a stone: ,,The beautiful one-Wilson Firebird". I 💕 love her- ❤️ Wilson Firebird❤️//Chris Mountain alias Polar Bear

I'm more than happy to hear your own opinions, even if for some stupid pathetic reason they disagree with mine. :-)
